01 November 2022

We were delighted to be able to launch our new report at our annual PLA Conference 2022: ‘Valuing Prison Education, Valuing Prison Educators’, on 19 October.

The report – Professional development for prison educators: How can we train, support, and develop the prison teacher workforce? – is a synthesis of the views of our expert Working Group, and brings together ideas about training, supporting, and developing the prison teacher workforce. It follows our research with UCU last year on the Hidden Voices report, which demonstrated that prison educators are undervalued.

This new briefing sets out a vision of prison education as a meaningful career choice embedded in the mainstream teaching route.

As a call-to-action, the Working Group provided recommendations in four different areas:

  • for the Ministry of Justice,
  • for HMPPS,
  • for prison education providers,
  • for teacher training colleges/PGCE providers.

We are incredibly grateful to all the working group members for their time and contributions, and in particular to John Vorhaus for chairing this group and leading this work.
